Men’s Tennis Open 2013 Fall Season at Fresno St. Bulldog Classic
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly men's tennis team will open the 2013-14 season at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic this weekend, Sept. 27-29 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The tournament kicks off at 10 a.m. on Friday with singles matches, doubles matches will follow directly afterwards. Saturday and Sunday's singles matches will begin at 9 a.m. each day.
Over 30 players from Cal Poly, Pacific, St. Mary's, Fresno City College and Fresno State will be in competition.
Senior Mrco Comuzzo will be one of six Mustangs competing in flight A singles. Comuzzo was an All-Big West Conference First Team performer last season when he posted a 24-10 overall record and 15-7 mark in dual matches. The former Big West freshman of the year posted a11-6 record from the second court and was 4-1 from the third. He earned second team honors in doubles when he paired with Matt Thomson.
Also competing in Flight A will be true freshman Ben Donovan. The freshman completed the 2013 season as the 26th-ranked player in the nation and the 2nd-ranked player in the state of Tennessee.
Junior Naveen Beasley will see action after posting a 20-12 overall record in singles play and 14-9 record in dual matches. He was an impressive 8-1 from the fifth court last season.
Sophomore Derek Klein returns for his sophomore season after recording a 15-14 overall record. He was 10-10 in dual matches and was 3-2 from the third court and 7-8 from the fourth.
Another newcomer expected to compete will be freshman Corey Pang. Pang concluded the 2013 season with a national ranking of 133 and was ranked 36th in the Southwest region.
Gannon Daynes returns for his sophomore season. Gaynes posted a 5-6 overall record and was 1-3 in dual matches.
Expected to compete in the round robin competition will be senior Matt Thomson and sophomore Devon Barber.
Thomson earned BWC second team honors in doubles with Comuzzo when they posted a 13-7 record in dual matches. In singles play he was 6-6 overall.
Baber was 2-2 in singles play last fall and played in doubles in two dual matches with a 1-1 record.
Four doubles teams are expected to represent Cal Poly led by the No. 1 seeded team of Comuzzo and Thomson. Also competing will be the duos of Baber and Klein, Beasley and Daynes and Donovan and Pang.
