SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Senior Marco Comuzzo advanced in the consolation bracket after falling in the opening round of the Battle of Bay Classic on Friday while freshman Ben Donovan picked up an opening round win before falling in the second round. The University of San Francisco in conjunction with San Francisco's historic California Tennis Club are hosting the 2013 Battle of the Bay.
Donovan opened play with a straight set win, 6-2, 6-1, over San Francisco's Thomas Takemoto. In the round of 32 he lost to Stanford's Daniel Ho after winning the first set, 6-0. Ho rebounded to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-4.
Comuzzo lost to Stanford's Anthony Tsodikov, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in a tough battle, but rebounded to defeat Andrew Raphaelson, 6-4, 6-1, from the University of San Diego. Comuzzo will face Karue Sell of UCLA on Saturday at 2 pm.
Senior Matt Thomson received a bye in the opening round and faced the No. 7 seed, Thorsten Bertsch of San Diego State, falling 6-3, 6-3, and lost, 6-4, 6-4 to USF's Rich Van Hout in the consolation draw.
Naveen Beasley lost his opening match to Cal's Filip Bergavi, 6-3, 6-3, and lost, 6-3, 6-3 to Takemoto in the consolation draw.
In doubles action, Cal Poly duo of Donovan and Thomson lost in the opening round of play to the No 1 seeded team from San Diego State, Bertsch and Nicolas, 8-4.
