Three Mustangs Advance to the Round of 32 at USTA/ITA SW Regional

MALIBU, Calif. – Three Cal Poly men's tennis players advanced to the round of 32 at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship on Friday hosted by Pepperdine University. Marco Comuzzo, Ben Donovan and Gannon Daynes all advanced to Saturday's round.

Comuzzo received a bye in the opening round and defeated Set Stolar of UCLA in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to face Grand Canyon's Nicholas Moulin.

Donovan battled through two matches on Friday, defeating Big West Conference foe, Erik Johnson from UCSB, 6-4, 6-3. Donovan came back later in the day to defeat, Pepperdine's Kento Ianaka-Iamaki, 6-2, 7-5. Donovan will face the No. 4 seed in the tournament, Roberto Quiroz from USC on Saturday.

Daynes, after an opening round bye, defeated Hawai'i's Marcel Chan, 6-1 and 6-1.

In the round of 128, Devin Barber lost to San Diego's Andrew Raphaelson, 6-3, 6-2, while Naveen Beasley and Corey Pang lost in the round of 64. Beasley lost to LMU's Cristobal Rivera, 6-4, 6-2, while Pang lost to Michael Guzman of UCLA, 2-6, 7-6 and 6-4. Pang defeated UC Irvine's Justin Agbayani, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round.

Senior Matt Thomson lost in the round of 64 to UCLA's Tyoto Tachi, 6-1, 6-1.

All three of Cal Poly doubles teams received opening round byes and will be in action on Saturday.
