Two Doubles Teams Remain in Contention at USTA/ITA SW Regional

MALIBU, Calif.—Two Cal Poly doubles teams will be in action on Sunday in the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships hosted by Pepperdine University.

Ben Donovan and Matt Thomson advanced to the round of 16 when the duo defeated Riaran Fitzgerald and Romain Kalayduian of the University of San Diego, 8-6, on Saturday. The Mustang duo will face the seeded team of Dennis Mkrtchian and Clay Thompson of UCLA on Sunday.

Devin Barber and Corey Pang advanced after defeating Hendrik Jebens Jonas Meinzer of San Diego State, 8-7, and will face the seeded team from USD, Uros Petronijevic and Andrew Raphaelson on Sunday.

A third Cal Poly doubles team, Marco Comuzzo and Gannon Daynes, failed to advance when they lost to Stefan Menichella and David Sofaer of Pepperdine, 8-7.

In the championship draw on Saturday, Comuzzo advanced to the round of 16 before falling to No. 58 Eric Johnson of USC, 6-4, 6-3. He defeated Nickolas Moulan of Grand Canyon, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 32.

Donovan and Daynes did not advance past the round of 32. Donovan lost, 6-1, 6-3, to Joseph Digiulo from UCLA, 6-1, 6-3, while Donovan lost 6-2, 7-5, to USC's Roberto Quiroz.

In the back draw, Barber advanced to the third round before fallilng, 6-1, 7-5, to UCI's Shuhei Shibahara. He defeated Jonas Meinzer of San Diego State in a battle, 6-4, 4-6 and 10-8.

Falling in the second round of the back draw was Naveen Beesley and Thmpson. Beesley lost 6-1, 6-1, to UCSB's Sasha Gryaznov while Thomson lost, 6-4, 6-1, to Chas Okamoto of Hawai'i.
