Pang and Barber Advance at So. Calif. Intercollegiate Championships
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Two Cal Poly men's tennis players advance in the first day of play at the 57th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Freshman Corey Pang advanced to the semifinal round in qualifying singles draw when he defeated Nikki Rae of BYU in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-3. Pang will face Caryl Hernandez of UC Irvine in the next round.
On the other side of the qualifying singles draw, junior Devin Barber may have had the most exciting match of the day when he came from behind to win the round of 16 match in three sets. Barber lost the first set, 6-3, to the University of San Diego's Ganesh Alagappan. Barber fought back to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-4. He will face Jeremy Bourgeois of BYU in the semifinal round.
Sophomore Gannon Daynes will see his first action of the championship on Thursday when he will face the No. 4 seed, Tobias Galskov of UCSB in the main singles draw.
The doubles duo of Barber and Pang will open play on Thursday afternoon when they face Charles Cope and Severin Diemand of Concordia in the round of 16 of the qualifying draw.
Former Cal Poly standout and All-American, Andre Dome, won the 56th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate last season as a senior.
