Cal Poly Defeats Penn 4-1 for Fifth Win in a Row

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After seizing the doubles point in a convincing manner Saturday afternoon, the Cal Poly men's tennis team kept its midseason momentum rolling, defeating Penn 4-1 in a shortened match at Mustang Courts.

It was the fifth win in a row for the Mustangs, and their seventh victory in their past eight times out.

Marco Comuzzo and Matt Thomson started by sidelining Zach Katz and Marshall Sharp 6-3 on the No. 1 doubles court, before Devin Barber and Corey Pang won by the same margin at No. 2 over Jeremy Court and Vim De Alwis to make the third matchup unnecessary.

In singles, Ben Donovan continued his impressive freshman season of late, improving to 8-3 in duals this year by topping Nikola Kucovic 6-1, 6-2.

On the No. 2 court, Comuzzo put the Mustangs ahead 3-0 with his 6-3, 6-4 victory over De Alwis.

The Quakers (3-7), however, prevented the sweep thanks to a win at the No. 6 spot. Soon afterward, though, Jurgen De Jager secured the final score at No. 4, earning a 6-3, 6-5 (7-5) win over Matt Nardella.

With travel concerns in mind, the two teams agreed beforehand to cut the match short after the overall outcome had been clinched. (Pang and Gannon Daynes were both up for Cal Poly before their contests were determined unfinished with respect to the final score.)

The Mustangs (7-8) will return to Big West Conference play by traveling to Hawai'i for a match starting at 5 p.m. PDT March 24.
