SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing a vital role in Cal Poly's pivotal win over UC Davis on Saturday, freshman Ben Donovan was named the Big West Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
In a match that would yield sole possession of third place in the Big West standings and keep the prospect of a bye at the upcoming conference tournament alive for the Mustangs, Donovan (now 15-9 overall) came back from an opening-set loss at the top of the lineup to defeat Alec Adamson 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
In the middle set — with the team outcome resting on his shoulders — he saved match points on four occasions to ultimately help Cal Poly move to 3-1 in conference play.
Also against the Aggies, he teamed with senior Jurgen De Jager to win in doubles, 8-4 over Brett Bacharach and Adam Luba.
Earlier in the week, in a 4-2 loss (was on pace to be 4-3 before an unfinished contest) at No. 43 Stanford on April 8, Donovan swept Cardinal senior Daniel Ho 6-3, 6-2 on the No. 2 court.
Cal Poly will finish the regular season at home, with the Blue-Green Rivalry against conference co-leader UC Santa Barbara (8-12, 3-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday (also Senior Day).
