Cal Poly Drops Two at Campbell/Cartier Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A three-run first inning by BYU stood as the winning edge for the Cougars as the Cal Poly softball team suffered a 5-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at the San Diego State-hosted Campbell/Cartier Classic. The Mustangs also dropped the back end of their twinbill, following versus No. 6 UCLA during the evening, 4-0.

Against the Cougars (8-12), catcher Jessica Purcell-Fitu provided BYU the only offense it required with a one-out, two-run double during the top of the first. Two batters later, first baseman Katie Manuma singled home Fitu as BYU increased its advantage to 3-0 before Cal Poly had the chance to bat.

BYU starting pitcher Paige Affleck (5-8), who yielded just four Mustang hits, faced only two Cal Poly hitters over the minimum through the initial four innings. The Mustangs, who received two hits from leadoff batter and freshman shortstop Kim Westlund, failed to advance a runner past first base during the game.

BYU added a run during the third via Caschjen Davis-Atagi's one-out solo home run before finalizing the scoreline during the seventh with Fitu scoring on an Anna Cahn wild pitch.

Versus defending Women's College World Series champion UCLA (16-4), Bruin shortstop Kellie Fox provided her side the only lead of the night during the first inning with a one-out single through the right side of the infield to score third baseman GiOnna DiSalvatore. UCLA then furthered its lead to 3-0 during the third following catcher Dani Yudin's two-run single up the middle.

Held to just one baserunner through the opening three innings by UCLA starting lefthander Jessica Hall (10-3), Cal Poly's best chance to score came during the fourth when freshman right fielder Jillian Andersen and Cahn drew walks. With freshman Jen Walker running for Cahn, Mustang junior designated player Nicole Lund grounded out to force both Cal Poly baserunners into scoring position. Hall, however, struck out junior left fielder Nora Sobczak to end the Mustang threat.

Cahn (1-5) suffered the loss despite allowing just four Bruin hits.

Cal Poly completes Campbell/Cartier Classic action on Sunday, March 6 versus Baylor at 11:30 a.m. and San Diego State at 2 p.m.
