Hyland Strikes Out 11, but Cal Poly Edged in Eight Innings at Fresno State

FRESNO – Senior righthander Sierra Hyland struck out 11 Fresno State batters without a walk Thursday evening, but the Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Mustangs opened the Bulldog Classic with a 3-2, eight-inning loss at Margie Wright Diamond.

Tied 1-1 and with the international tiebreaker rule in effect to begin the eighth, Cal Poly senior left fielder Courtney Tyler started the inning on second base. She reached third base through a groundout from freshman first baseman Hailey Martin before scoring on a wild pitch from Fresno State starting righthander Kamalani Dung (6-2) to provide Cal Poly a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, however, Fresno State shortstop Katie Castellon lined a two-out, two-run double to left center field to score pinch runners Brooke Coates and Christina Rodriguez as the Bulldogs walked off 3-2 winners.

Cal Poly (6-4) notched Thursday's opening run in the top of the first inning as junior shortstop Chelsea Convissar produced a one-out single before junior third baseman Stephanie Heyward and Tyler drew successive walks. Hyland then produced an infield groundout to bring home Convissar for a 1-0 lead.

Hyland (4-3) struck out the Fresno State side during the bottom half of the inning, but the Bulldogs equalized in the second as Hernandez followed a one-out triple by left fielder Kierra Willis with a run-scoring, infield single.

Hyland, who posted her second successive double-digit strikeout game, kept Fresno State (7-4) to just three hits while striking out a pair of Bulldogs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

The Mustangs, meanwhile, produced seven hits with Convissar and sophomore right fielder Crimson Kaiser finishing with two apiece.

Cal Poly continues Bulldog Classic action on Friday, Feb. 24 versus Idaho State at 2:30 p.m.
