SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning seven starters and 16 total letterwinners from a 38-win effort last year, the Cal Poly softball program begins the 2018 season with a five-game stretch at the Feb. 9-11, UCLA-hosted, Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. Cal Poly, which also welcomes back four of its top five hitters from a 2017 squad that led all Big West Conference programs in wins, opens the year on Friday, Feb. 9 versus Maryland (11-39-1) at 10:30 a.m. and Middle Tennessee (19-30) at 1 p.m. Action continues on Saturday, Feb. 10 against No. 5 UCLA (48-15) at 12 noon before a 5 p.m. rematch with Maryland. Cal Poly, which finished fourth last season in the inaugural 26-team National Invitational Softball Championship postseason tournament, concludes the opening weekend with a 2 p.m. matchup versus the Bruins on Sunday, Feb. 11. The opening week marks Cal Poly's return to the Winsberg Tournament after an eight-year absence with the Mustangs holding a 4-3 all-time record at the event.

CAL POLY VERSUS STACEY WINSBERG MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS: Cal Poly's all-time series with Maryland stands at 1-1 with the Mustangs prevailing 4-0 in the last meting between the two programs on Feb. 22, 2014 in Cathedral City, Calif. The Terrapins won the other matchup in 2006 … Cal Poly swept two games from Middle Tennessee during last year's Mustang Classic, prevailing 3-0 (March 3) and 2-1 in eight innings (March 4) in the only previous meetings versus the Blue Raiders … Cal Poly looks to snap a 21-game side versus UCLA with the Bruins holding a 23-2 series advantage at the Division I level. Cal Poly's only victories versus the Bruins came during a doubleheader sweep on April 6, 1997. UCLA won last year's matchup in Cathedral City, 3-1.
MUSTANGS FACE NATION'S FINEST ONCE MORE IN 2018: In what has become a hallmark of 14th-year head coach Jenny Condon's tenure, Cal Poly will again contest one of the more competitive schedules in Division I during the 2018 season. In total, 10 of Cal Poly's opening 28 games occur against programs ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll (ranking from date of game).
LOOKING AHEAD (FEB. 17-19): Cal Poly's seven-tournament, pre-Big West Conference stretch continues with five games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif. Cal Poly's tournament draw begins on Saturday, Feb. 17 versus Sacramento State at 3:30 p.m. and UAB at 6 p.m. Action resumes on Sunday, Feb. 18 versus No. 15 Utah at 9:30 a.m. and California at 12:30 p.m. Cal Poly wraps play in the desert with an 8:30 a.m. matchup versus Syracuse on Monday, Feb. 19.
