Cal Poly Women's Basketball Shoot-A-Thon and International Trip

Cal Poly Women's Basketball Shoot-A-Thon and International Trip

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The ninth annual Cal Poly Women's Basketball Shoot-A-Thon will be held on Thursday, April 12 in Mott Athletics Center. The event will support the Mustangs' upcoming overseas trip to Australia in the summer of 2019.

The trip makes a huge impact on the program with regard to recruiting, playing international competition, and allows student-athletes an opportunity to study abroad during their time at Cal Poly. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity cannot happen without your help.

Currently, the Mustangs have raised $50,000 toward the trip to Australia, which will cost around $100,000. The program has a benefactor, who will match dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000, in helping the team get to Australia. Our current goal is to raise $25,000 by June 30.

If you would rather make a straight gift to the women's basketball program to help the team, you can find the pledge form linked here. Pledges can be made over two-year spans.

Head Coach Faith Mimnaugh on the great opportunity to travel abroad and how important this trip is to our program:

"My first time on an airplane, I traveled from Chicago to Taiwan with other 18-year-old promising basketball players to compete in a junior Olympic tournament. I had such little money that I didn't eat or drink anything on the 22-hour plane ride because I thought you had to pay for your meals and drinks. Since that time, I have traveled the world, some with basketball teams and some for personal pleasure. Thankfully, I learned that food and non-alcoholic drinks are included in the cost of the ticket. There are so many more things that I learned from that trip, however.

I learned to appreciate my family, my country and my opportunities with a depth that transformed my daily life. What I remember from that trip sticks with me today and set me on a path of confident independence that I could navigate this world. As the world seems to shrink and globalization creates even more economic and business cooperation, our students would benefit greatly from an opportunity to expand their knowledge and their world.

Every four years the NCAA allows us to take our student-athletes on a foreign tour. A foreign tour is a ten-day trip to a foreign country in which the student-athletes get to see a new part of the country, learn about different cultures and play international competition. Our team has participated in two foreign tours to Costa Rica (2011, 2015).

Our next tour is scheduled for the summer of 2019 and we are planning to travel to Australia. Australia offers a unique opportunity to compete against better international competition. The foreign tour offers our student-athletes a study-abroad experience that many times they cannot participate in because of their commitment to basketball.

We are very close to achieving our fundraising goal of $100,000, but we need your help! We have received a generous $25,000 donation that we need to match by June 30. If we can match this donation, we will hit our goal! We are reaching out to you, our alumni, to help us close the gap.

With an attitude of gratitude, would you consider helping us achieve this goal? One of the tenets of our program is to leave things in better shape than you found them. There are many ways we are trying to improve the program's opportunities, recruiting exposure and facilities. I hope you will consider extending your love for the Women's Basketball family through a generous donation."

For the Shoot-A-Thon, you may make a flat donation and/or sponsor the shooter(s) of your choice.

Each shooter will attempt a total of 150 shots for a possible 300 points. The form for the event can be found HERE.
