Cal Poly to Host Oregon State for Outdoor Dual Meet on Thursday

VIDEO STREAM | LIVE STATS

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly will wrestle nationally ranked Oregon State in its first-ever outdoor dual meet Thursday afternoon.

The Pac-12 Conference match between the unranked Mustangs (3-5) and No. 24 Beavers (8-5) begins at 3 p.m. in the plaza of the University Union. Admission is free.

"There are few if any locations in the U.S. that can pull off an outdoor wrestling match," said third-year Mustang head coach Brendan Buckley, "so to have this opportunity is quite exciting for all of us associated with Cal Poly wrestling.

"This will be a great opportunity for us to showcase our historic wrestling program and our beautiful campus," Buckley added.

The Citadel has hosted three outdoor dual meets, including one last season against Arizona State. The Sun Devils also wrestled Arizona outdoors in the 1970s. UC Davis hosted a pair of outdoor meets in the main quad in the late 1990s.

"There are but a handful of Division I wrestling programs that have a climate that would permit you to wrestle outside in January," Mustang director of athletics Don Oberhelman said in announcing the match in October. "This is a very unique opportunity to showcase our program to some folks on campus who otherwise have not seen a wrestling match, and to introduce our university to wrestling fans who may not understand the paradise that is Cal Poly."

Coming off losses to Wyoming and Northern Colorado on the road last week, Cal Poly will send three nationally ranked wrestlers against Oregon State.

Sophomore Devon Lotito sports a 17-7 record at 133 pounds and is ranked No. 18 in the first NCAA Division I Coaches Poll of the season, released Jan. 23. Lotito has won his last three matches by fall and is the defending Pac-12 champion at 133 pounds. He placed third in the Reno Tournament of Champions and seventh at the Midlands Championship earlier this season.

At 174 pounds, Dominic Kastl (pictured above) has won six of his last seven matches, losing only to Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech in the finals of the Shorty Hitchcock Open two weeks ago. Kastl, a junior, is 14-3 on the year and ranked No. 19 by the NCAA. He won the Pac-12 title at 165 pounds two years ago.

Blake Kastl is ranked No. 31 at 149 pounds and sports an 18-8 record. The redshirt freshman placed second in the Roadrunner Open and eighth in the Las Vegas Invitational earlier this year.

Oregon State will counter with six nationally ranked wrestlers, led by senior RJ Pena, ranked No. 8 at 157 pounds with a 27-4 record.

The others are senior Scott Sakaguchi (22-8), ranked No. 12 at 149 pounds; junior Taylor Meeks (22-6), No. 13 at 197 pounds; freshman Amarveer Dhesi (16-5), No. 18 at 285 pounds; junior Joe Latham (22-11), ranked No. 24 at 174 pounds; and senior Austin Morehead (17-5), ranked No. 33 at 184 pounds.

Oregon State, coached by Jim Zalesky, has won 34 of 44 dual meets against Cal Poly, including last year's 50-0 decision in Corvallis. The Mustangs last beat the Beavers 18-15 in the 2010-11 season, also at Corvallis.

Last week, Oregon State upset No. 20 Lehigh 28-10 and dropped a 20-18 decision to No. 6 Oklahoma, both matches in Corvallis. The Beavers also own wins over Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Wyoming, Stanford, Bakersfield and Air Force.

Cal Poly's three dual meet wins are over Bakersfield 25-6, San Francisco State 17-16 and Menlo 29-9.

Cal Poly also will send a contingent of wrestlers to the California Collegiate Open on Saturday at San Francisco State.
