DAVIS, Calif. --- Paced by two seniors and a freshman, the Cal Poly volleyball team swept the UC Davis Aggies in three sets on Saturday afternoon in Davis. With the win the Mustangs improve to 11-14 overall and 5-7 in conference matches while UC Davis falls to 14-13 overall and 6-8 in Big West matches.
The Mustangs won by set scores of 30-28, 25-19 and 25-20. Cal Poly will return to the court on Friday, Nov. 22 when the team will host UC Riverside for a Big West Conference match in Mott Athletics Center at 7 pm.
Senior Megan McConnell led the Mustangs with 15 kills on 49 swings while fellow senior, Chelsea Hardin, added 13 kills. True freshman Taylor Gruenewald added 10 in the win. Sophomore Hannah Schleis had four kills to her credit.
Sophomore Nicole Kessler led a group of four Mustangs with 10 or more digs with 14. McConnell made it a double-double with 13 digs with senior Steffi Sooter and junior Shannon Garrett adding 12 and 10 digs respectively. Garrett also had a double-double when she led the team 44 assists.
Devon Damelio and Victoria Lee led the team with nine kills each while Megan Lancaster had 15 digs to lead the team.
Cal Poly hit .230 for the three-set match while UC Davis was limited to a .163 hitting percentage. Cal Poly tallied 51 kills on 148 swings while the Aggies had 38 kills on 129 attempts. The Mustangs held a 70-65 advantage in digs and 5-3 edge in aces. UCD outblocked the Mustangs, 8-4.
Cal Poly held an 8-3 lead, in part to kills by Hardin and Gruenewald, to open the first set. UC Davis would come back to tie the set on a 6-1 run (9-9). The teams would trade points until Schleis put away a kill to give the Mustangs a 16-14 advantage. The Cal Poly took a 21-18 lead that forced a UCD timeout, but the Aggies would score three-straight to tie up the set. The teams would battle back-and-forth until an attack error by UCD and a kill by McConnell put away the first set, 30-28. Hardin had seven kills to lead the team with McConnell credited with four, and Gruenewald adding three kills.
In the second set the teams traded points when the Mustangs gained a three point advantage (6-3) on kill's by Gruenewald and McConnell, forcing a UC Davis timeout. The Mustangs expanded the lead to five (9-4) on a solo block by Garrett. The Mustangs held a 16-9 advantage on a kill by McConnell and made it an eight point lead after a setting error by the Aggies. The Mustangs went on to dominate the set, 25-19.
Cal Poly built an 11-7 lead on blocks by Schleis and Gera in the third set. The Mustangs kept the pressure up and held a 15-8 lead on one of Kate Walters three aces. UCD cut the lead to four (17-14) on a 4-1 run with the Mustangs calling timeout. UCD continued on a 3-1 run and closed to one (18-17) when the Mustangs responded with a 3-0 run of their own (21-17), capped by a Hardin kill, and a timeout by UC Davis. After a kill by McConnell, UC Davis rattled off three-straight, 22-20, but the Mustangs responded with three kills by McConnell a kill by Gera to close the set and the match, 25-20.
