IRVINE, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team came back from a two set deficit to defeat UC Irvine in five sets on Friday night in Irvine. With the win the Mustangs improve to 12-16 overall and 6-9 in Big West play while UCI falls to 14-15 overall and 5-10 in conference matches.
Cal Poly won by set scores of 17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 17-15. The Mustangs will conclude the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Long Beach State for a Big West Conference match.
Cal Poly was led by senior Megan McConnell's 23 kills. McConnell's kills came on 75 swings, good for a .240 hitting percentage. Freshman Taylor Gruenewald tallied 18kills on 35 swings (.400) while senior Marianne Gera recorded nine kills.
Junior Shannon Garrett had a team-high 25 digs to go along with her 51 assists. Sophomore Nicole Kessler and senior Steffi Sooter each had 24 digs. McConnell made it a double-double with 16 digs to go along with her kills.
UCI was led by Cassidy Pickrell with16 kills and Shannon Fleming with 13. Shelley Anderson and Arden Davis each had a team-high 19 digs.
Cal Poly as a team hit .173 with a total of 111 digs. The Mustangs served up three aces and had five total team blocks.
UCI hit .203 and amassed 106 digs. UCI had six service aces and 11 team blocks.
The match had a total of 32 ties and 13 lead changes in the five sets.
