ST. LOUIS,– The Mustang volleyball split on their last day of the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic, beating Saint Louis University 3-1 and then being defeated by Arkansas State 3-2.
Cal Poly put up a fight Saturday morning against Arkansas State but fell short after a five-set match.
The Mustangs started off the morning strong but unfortunately couldn't keep up the pace, as they won their first two sets 25-17, 25-23, but lost in the last three, 25-22, 25-20, 15-11.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs still produced some good numbers. Junior Taylor Nelson put up 46 of the team's 54 assists while also getting seven digs and two kills.
The Mustangs came back stronger than ever in their second match of the day against Saint Louis, only falling in set one, 25-22, but coming back and winning in the next three sets, 25-11, 25-23, 25-12.
Clewis once again led the team in kills, as she had 15, with Van Winden and Greisen right behind her with 10.
Freshman Mika Dickson broke Saint Louis' Chaifetz Arena record with seven aces in a match.
The Mustangs had a .276 attack percentage compared to Saint Louis' .160.
Not only did the Mustangs have a winning record on the weekend, they are they 2016 Marcia E. Hamilton Classic Champions.
The Mustangs will be back at it again next weekend, as they will be traveling to Stanford to take on Stanford and Purdue in the Stanford Inviatational.
