Mustangs Sweep Aggies for 18th Straight Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden had a team-high 11 kills, hitting .476 and had three blocks to lead the Cal Poly volleyball team in a sweep over UC Davis Friday night at Mott Athletics Center (25-16, 25-16, 25-16) for its 18th straight win.

The Mustangs (23-2, 13-0) can now clinch the Big West Conference Championship with a win Saturday over UC Irvine. It would be the first time since 2007.

Senior setter Taylor Nelson finished with 28 assists to surpass the 1,000 assist mark for the season. Junior Adlee Van Winden, senior Raeann Greisen and freshman Madilyn Mercer each posted seven kills. Senior Savannah Niemen finished with six kills. Junior libero Katherine Brouker had a team-high nine digs.

Cal Poly outhit the Aggies (15-12, 7-7) in each of the three sets, including hitting .500 in both the first and third sets. Cal Poly hit .467 for the match, their second highest hitting percentage match of the season.

The teams traded points to begin the first set before the Mustangs pulled away. Up 9-7, Cal Poly went on a 7-1 run to go up 16-8. They would not look back from there and would go on to win the set 25-16.

The second set would prove to be similar to the first. The first part of the set was back-and-forth before, up 12-10, the Mustangs would go on an 8-2 run to go up 20-12. They would go win the set 25-16.

Up 9-7 in the third set, Cal Poly went on a 6-2 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Aggies would cut the lead to as close as four but the Mustangs would hang on to win the set to complete the sweep.

Cal Poly will look to clinch the Big West title and go perfect at home for the first since 2007 Saturday against UC Irvine. First serve for the match is 2 p.m. Saturday will also be senior day as the three seniors, Savannah Niemen, Raeann Greisen and Taylor Nelson will have their careers honored before the match.
