SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After going 4-0 during last weekend’s Big West Tournament, including the clinching win in the championship match against top-seeded Hawai'i to help the Cal Poly beach volleyball team earn its first Big West Conference Championship in program history and propel the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance, junior Brayden Gruenewald and freshman Vanessa Roscoe have been named Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athletes of the Week.
The Mustangs’ No. 5 pairing beat pairs from Sacramento State, No. 12 Long Beach State, and No. 5 Hawai’i twice during the tournament.
In the championship match against the Rainbow Wahine, Gruenewald and Roscoe went to a deciding third set which is first-to-15 and win-by-two format. In that set, the duo fought off multiple match points on the way to a 21-19 victory to propel Cal Poly to a 3-2 match win over Hawai’i to secure the program’s first ever Big West title.
For the season, Gruenewald and Roscoe are 16-11 and are 7-3 in their last 10 matches.
The Mustangs now prepare for their first NCAA Tournament appearance this weekend in Gulf Shores, Ala. Cal Poly is the No. 6 seed in the eight-team, double-elimination-style tournament and will face No. 3 seed Florida State on Friday at 10 a.m. PT. That match will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The NCAA Tournament runs May 3-5 will all matches prior to the national championship airing on either ESPNU or ESPN2. The championship match on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT will air on ESPN.
