SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior catcher Myles Emmerson, who drove in five runs in the Mustangs’ Big West Conference series win over Hawai’i last weekend, is the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Emmerson went 7-for-15 (.467) in four games last week.
The week began with a double by Emmerson at Fresno State, followed by a 6-for-11 performance at the plate in three games against Hawai’i.
On Friday night, Emmerson produced his second career four-hit game and drove in a run with each of his four singles as Cal Poly opened the series with a 12-4 victory. His other four-hit game as a Mustang was a year ago against Michigan in the Tony Gwynn Classic hosted by San Diego State.
Emmerson added a single and a walk in Saturday’s 3-2 triumph and singled to knock in another run in Sunday’s 4-1 loss.
A .077 hitter four weeks into the season, Emmerson has come alive at the plate. The Mustang backstop is 31-for-90 (.344) over the last eight weeks with five doubles and a home run, his first career four-bagger occurring April 28 against USC at Baggett Stadium.
Emmerson is Cal Poly’s top hitter in 15 Big West Conference games with a .408 average.
For the season, Emmerson is hitting .264 with six doubles, one home run and 15 RBI. He has committed just four errors in 340 fielding chances, has picked off three runners and has thrown out 11 would-be base stealers.
Cal Poly (22-22) hosts Pepperdine (20-20) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and the first-place Mustangs resume Big West play this weekend at third-place UC Irvine.
