Conagher Sands, Freshman, Designated Hitter, 6-3, 215, Bakersfield, Calif. | Centennial High School
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Conagher Sands has started Cal Poly’s last nine games as the team’s designated hitter.
Today, the freshman from Bakersfield has an eight-game hitting streak and a .370 batting average.
Sands, who played a key role in Cal Poly’s sweep of a Big West Conference baseball series at UC Davis over the weekend, has been selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
In Friday’s series opener at Dobbins Stadium, Sands tripled to drive in two runs in the first inning and also contributed a double. On Saturday, Sands’ pair of sacrifice flies netted two more runs. And in the finale Sunday, his single with two outs in the eighth inning tied the game at 5-5 and Cal Poly completed its comeback from a 5-0 deficit with a run in the ninth for the 6-5 win.
Cal Poly swept UC Davis on the road for the first time in program history and maintained sole possession of first place in the Big West at 7-2. The Mustangs have won 14 of their last 22 games after a 2-9 start and are 16-17 for the year.
Sands had just one RBI for the season entering the weekend series at UC Davis and drove in five against the Aggies, going 4-for-10 with two singles, a double and a triple.
During his current eight-game hitting streak, Sands has gone 11-for-29 (.379). He was 4-for-11 in the Cal State Fullerton series two weeks ago.
Cal Poly continues Big West play Thursday through Saturday at Long Beach State.
