BIG WEST RELEASE (pdf)
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Eighteen Cal Poly student-athletes from five fall season teams earned spots on the 2017 Big West Conference Fall All-Academic Team announced Tuesday.
In order to qualify, student-athletes (excluding true freshmen and first-year transfers) are required to have maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA through the most recent term while also simultaneously competing in at least 50 percent of their respective games, meets or matches.
Leading the way was the Mustangs’ Big West championship men’s cross country team with six runners exceeding the standards: Senior Swarnjit Boyal (a civil engineering major from Yuba City), juniors Peter Cotsirilos (a mechanical engineering major from Wilmette, IL), Mikey Giguere (a business administration major from Westlake Village), Alex Merder (a biological sciences major from Carlsbad) and Garrett Migliozzi (a business administration major from Grass Valley) and sophomore Chas Cook (a wine and viticulture major from Orlando, FL).
The women’s soccer team was next with five honorees: Senior Emily Hansen (a biological sciences major from Sacramento), juniors Ashley Kirchick (a Recreation, recreation, parks and tourism administration major from San Jose), Sydney Knauer (a business administration major from San Luis Obispo) and Stephanie Magellan (a kinesiology major from San Jose) and sophomore Sophia Brown (an aeronautical engineering major from Pleasanton).
The Mustang women’s cross country squad saw four runners earn the accolade: Senior Maddie McDonald (a biological sciences major from Orange), juniors Bryanna Fuller (a business administration major from San Diego) and Hannah Hull (a business administration major from Valley Springs) and sophomore Melodie Leroudier (a kinesiology major from Pleasanton).
The women’s volleyball team is represented by a pair of sophomores: Jessica McRoskey (a materials engineering major from San Diego) and Nikki Jackson (a recreation, parks and tourism administration major from Henderson, NV).
The men’s soccer program produced one honoree, senior goalkeeper Simon Boehme, a recreation, parks and tourism administration major from Copenhagen, Denmark.
The class listed for each of the honored student-athletes is their academic standing and not necessarily their athletic eligibility.
Following Tuesday’s announcement, Cal Poly has now had 114 Big West Conference All-Academic Team honorees in the fall over the past five years.
