11th Annual Big West Coin Drive Opens Thursday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting coins during the month of February and the beneficiary will be the Hearst Cancer Resource Center at French Hospital Medical Center.

Members of Block P will seek donations from fans attending several home athletics events during the month and there also is an option to donate online directly to French Hospital’s web site at Instructions are below.

The Big West Conference’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee is organizing the 11th annual Coin Drive with each of the nine schools selecting a charity of their choice.

Cal Poly’s Block P members chose the Hearst Cancer Resource Center for the second straight year. Other Big West institutions and their selections: Cal State Fullerton (Donate Life); CSUN (Matador Fire Relief Fund); Long Beach State (CSULB Beach Pantry); UC Davis (YOLO County SPCA); UC Irvine (Active Minds @ UCI); UC Riverside (Riverside Community Settlement Association); UC Santa Barbara (United Way Thomas Fire and Flood Fund); Hawai‘i (Hawai‘i Pacific American Cancer Society).

The Hearst Cancer Resource Center provides guidance, support and resources to patients newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, in recovery and beyond. Its wellness and support services provide a bridge between standard medical care and a full range of healing therapies while offering ways to help build a personal support system and offer a sense of extended family. The Mustangs are excited to donate to a charity that has a direct impact on the San Luis Obispo community.

The Big West Coin Drive has raised over $196,000 over the last 10 years. Last year’s total was $20,252.56, the fifth-highest total in the fundraiser's history with the record-breaking sum of $36,271.76 raised in 2013.

For the fourth year in a row, institutions will donate 100 percent of the funds raised to their designated charities. The top three fundraising SAACs will receive a cash prize to put toward their SAAC budget.

“The commitment the Big West Student Athlete Advisory Committee has demonstrated to charitable works over the years truly has been inspiring,” said Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell. “The Coin Drive is a symbol of their dedication and we look forward to the continued growth of the event.”

All are encouraged to bring their change to a Big West school to support a worthwhile cause in the month of February.
