Karin Smith has been recognized as a national and international track star in the javelin throw. She is an All-American athlete and was co-captain of the USA Track Team.
Karin was a member of five Olympic teams: 1976 in Montreal, 1980 in Moscow (team did not compete), 1984 in Los Angeles, 1988 in Seoul, and 1992 in Barcelona. She dislocated her shoulder in her last attempt at the USA Olympic Trials which required surgery but was still given full team status because she won the trials.
She has been the recipient of both the "Broderick" and "Jackson" awards in recognition of her outstanding achievement in women's track and field. Smith currently lives in Los Osos and occasionally works on event staff at Cal Poly. During the summers she volunteers as an activity director for 6 to 8 year-old terminally ill children at Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine.
