Mustangs Open Season with Doubleheader Shutouts
2/9/2024 5:40:00 PM | Softball
SACRAMENTO, CA – The Cal Poly softball team is off to a picture-perfect start to the 2024 season after posting shutouts in each of the day's doubleheader contests. After a massive 15-0 run rule victory over San Jose State to start the day and a nailbiting 1-0 defensive clinic against hosts Sacramento State following it up, the Mustangs head into day 2 of the NorCal Kickoff undefeated and without allowing a single run through the first 12 innings of the year.
Mia Perez hardly missed a beat, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI as Xiara Diaz combined to score on almost every appearance, totaling 4 hits and 4 runs in 5 at-bats. On the defensive end, both starting pitchers Sophia Ramuno and Kate Judy picked up victories while reliever Paige Maier allowed just two total hits in closing out both games.
During the 9:30am season opener, Cal Poly rallied from a quick two-out hole and wasted no time in finding 2024's first run with Jessica Clements crossing home plate on a San Jose State throwing error before tacking on two more unearned runs as Mia Perez picked up her first two of four RBIs on the day.
Sophomore ace and 2023 Big West Freshman Team honoree Sophia Ramuno had no trouble sitting down the first three Spartans in order to round out the first inning. The Mustangs then opened the flood gates to put the game far out of reach. After Julia Barnett walked to open the second inning, Xiara Diaz, Kiara Blanchard, and Juju Sargent each picked up separate pairs of RBIs, giving Cal Poly a 12-run lead just two innings through the opening battle.
Tacking on three more scores before the run rule was called, the Mustangs got off to as good of a start as possible. Ramuno pitched three and one-third innings with just a singular hit allowed while tossing five strikeouts. Right-handed junior Paige Maier relieved Ramuno to complete the day's first shutout.
Julia Barnett, Caroline Allman, Jessica Clements, and Malia Mah all added the game's remaining RBIs as the Mustangs dominated the Spartans 15-0 heading straight into the doubleheader against Sacramento State.
During Friday's second 1-0 shutout victory, both teams seemed more evenly matched in a tight defensive deadlock for the majority of the afternoon battle. With no changes to their lineup with the exception of position swaps and a different starting pitcher, the Mustangs went the entire game without any substitutions.
Cal Poly and Sacramento State traded runners on base and hits through the first few innings to no avail, as the closest either squad came to scoring was when the Hornets strung together enough hits in the bottom of the second inning to advance a runner to third before right-handed junior Kate Judy closed the door with an inning-ending strikeout.
Finally, Xiara Diaz walked in the fourth inning and stole second base before advancing to third on a Kiara Blanchard single. Mia Perez's sac fly and fourth RBI of the doubleheader allowed Diaz to tag-up and score the game's sole run.
Judy continued to hold down the fort and generally limit the Hornets' offensive production until Paige Maier entered the circle in relief for the second time that day, allowing just one runner in six batters to seal a well-earned 2-0 start to the season.
Cal Poly continues the NorCal Kickoff tomorrow with a 9:30am game against Middle Tennessee at the original host site in Sacramento before traveling to Davis for the day's second game against Saint Mary's at 2:30pm.
