Cal Poly Cruises Past Broncos for Second Home Win
3/3/2024 6:30:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program took full advantage of playing on its home court for the first time in a month, rolling to a 5-2 victory over Santa Clara on Sunday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
Juniors Peyton Dunkle and Romane Mosse, and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock all secured singles victories in straight sets to help the Mustangs (5-5) grab their fifth straight win over the Broncos (2-5) and improve to 2-0 at home this season.
For the sixth time this season, Cal Poly opened the match by securing the doubles point. At No. 1, fifth year Delanie Dunkle and her younger sister, Peyton, cruised to a 6-2 win, improving to 7-2 this season and 22-10 together in their careers. The victory allowed Delanie to move into a tie with Amy Markhoff for the fifth most doubles victories in duals in program history with 48 in her career.
Then at No. 2, graduate student Melissa LaMette and Mosse clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 victory, moving to 5-3 on the year.
Buntrock made quick work in her singles match at No. 4 to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead, winning 6-1, 6-1. She improved her record to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 at the No. 4 spot.
Peyton also improved to 6-2 this spring, earning a decisive 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot to allow Cal Poly to take a 3-1 advantage. The Arroyo Grande native is currently No. 3 in Division I program history in career winning percentage in dual singles matches (70.4%).
All the Mustangs needed was one more win to clinch the dual and Mosse delivered one, grabbing her third straight victory at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore Alexandra Ozerets helped the Mustangs take a decisive 5-1 lead with a thrilling comeback win at the No. 5 spot. After dropping the first set in her match 6-3, Ozerets rallied to win the second and third sets each by a 6-3 score.
In the final match of the day, LaMette got into a dramatic battle at the No. 3 spot. LaMette dropped a first-set tiebreaker 7-3 but bounced back with a dominant 6-2 second set. The decisive third set also went to a tiebreaker, but LaMette came up just short, falling 7-4.
The win snapped a four-match losing streak for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will look to keep things rolling when they travel to Southern California to face CSUN on Saturday, March 9, and LMU on Sunday, March 10.
