9/5/2024 7:40:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
AUBURN, Ala. — Cal Poly volleyball fans were treated to an impressive collegiate debut of freshman outside hitter Kendall Beshear as she and senior outside hitter Tommi Stockham both finished with double digit kills. However, the Mustangs (2-2) fell on the road Thursday to Auburn 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) in the opening match of the Auburn-Troy Tournament.
Stockham had a match-high 11 kills to keep her streak of double digit kills in each match this season going. Beshear, a highly touted recruit who was an Under Armour All-American as a high school senior, finished with 10 kills to go along with seven digs. Junior setter Emme Bullis notched her third double-double of the season and 22nd of her career after posting 29 assists and a season-high 16 digs.
Despite the stellar individual performances, Cal Poly was plagued by 11 service errors as a team as the Tigers (5-0) limited the Mustangs to a .128 hitting percentage.
Auburn controlled the first set, leading the entire way en route to a 25-15 set win. In the second, Cal Pol held tight early. However, tied 8-8, the Tigers scored six straight points to pull ahead as they went on to win the set 25-17.
The Mustangs stayed close with Auburn the entire third set and even came back from down 21-17 to score three in a row and get it within one at 21-20. Auburn then scored four of the next five points to win the set 25-21 and the match.
The Mustangs will continue the Auburn-Troy Tournament Friday when facing No. 15 Florida State at 2 p.m. PT.
