SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly senior guard Annika Sha scored a game high 18 points but the Mustangs came up just short in a back-and-forth battle with Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara Thursday night in Mott Athletics Center, 63-60.
Shah shot 60 percent from the field, including 5-6 from three en route to her 18 points. Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie, senior guard Sydney Bourland, and sophomore forward Mary Carter each added nine points for the Mustangs, who remain in eighth place in the Big West standings after ninth place Cal State Fullerton lost to UC Irvine Thursday to remain one game behind Cal Poly in the standings.
The Mustangs shot 40 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. The Gauchos however, shot 43 percent for the game and outscored the Mustangs in points off turnovers 17-7.
Cal Poly got off to a good start, closing the first quarter on a 6-2 run to lead it 17-12 heading into the second. The Mustangs took a 19-12 lead to open the second, their largest of the game, before UCSB went on a 16-2 run to take a 28-21 lead. The Mustangs were able to close the gap at halftime, 31-26.
The Mustangs were able to cut the deficit down to two heading into the fourth quarter. With two minutes left in the game, Cal Poly took a 55-54 lead thanks to free throws by Bourland. UCSB then five straight points to go up 59-55 with 32 seconds left.
Down 62-57, Shah knocked down a three to get the Mustangs within two with four seconds left. The Gauchos then went 1-2 at the free throw line to give Cal Poly an opportunity to tie it. However, the Mustangs' baseline inbounds pass was stolen as time expired.
The Mustangs will go on the road Saturday to face Cal State Bakersfield for a 2 p.m. tip. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
