SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Cal Poly's nation-leading 12-game winning streak on the road came to an end Friday night as UC Santa Barbara scored twice in the sixth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and held on for a 5-4 victory at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Third baseman Alejandro Garza evened the score at 3-3 with his second career home run, both in the last week, this time a two-run shot to left field in the fifth frame, but the Gauchos evened the Big West baseball series at a game apiece with a two-out rally in the sixth on a hit batter and three consecutive singles.
With the nationally televised (ESPNU) loss, Cal Poly falls into a first-place tie with UC Irvine, a 4-0 winner over Hawai'i, as both the Mustangs and Anteaters sport 15-2 conference records. The Mustangs are 27-10 for the season while the Gauchos improved to 25-12 (11-9 Big West).
Garza extended his hitting streak to 20 games with his home run and added a run-scoring single in the ninth as Cal Poly closed the gap to 5-4, but catcher Jack Collins popped up to first base to end the game. For Garza, it was his ninth multiple-hit game in his last 11 starts.
Only five Mustangs have produced hitting streaks of more than 20 games in Cal Poly's 31-year Division I history. The record is 26 games by Ryan Lee in 2009.
UCSB right-hander AJ Krodel (2-1), who entered the game with one out in the fifth inning, went the rest of the way for the victory, allowing one run and three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Starter Calvin Proskey gave up three runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.
The loss was charged to Mustang sophomore southpaw Josh Volmerding (4-2), who surrendered five runs over 5 2/3 innings with six walks and three strikeouts. Chris Downs secured the final out in the sixth after allowing both inherited runners to score and Josh Morano retired all six Gaucho batters he faced.
Cal Poly outhit UC Santa Barbara 10-6, led by Garza, Collins, center fielder Casey Murray Jr., and designated hitter Cam Hoiland, each with a pair of hits.
Cole Kosciusko and Jonathan Mendez both produced two hits for UCSB.
Cal Poly scored in the first inning on a throwing error, a passed ball, and an RBI single to left by Collins. The Gauchos answered in the second on back-to-back doubles by Mendez and Nate Vargas but had runners tagged out at third base and home plate in the inning.
UCSB took the lead, 3-1, with two runs in the third, taking advantage of a dropped ball in the outfield and a bases-loaded walk. Garza's two-run home run tied the score again at 3-3 in the fifth.
After UCSB secured the 5-3 lead in the sixth, it stayed that way until the ninth when Zach Daudet, out the last nine games for medical reasons, entered the game as a pinch-hitter and singled up the middle with one out. Pinch-runner Xander McLaurin stole second and Garza singled to left-center field for his third RBI of the game, making it a one-run contest. Krodel, however, secured the final out to give the Gauchos the win.
Cal Poly's four-game winning streak was snapped Friday. UCSB's five-game conference winning streak was halted Thursday night in an 11-inning 4-3 Mustang win.
Cal Poly will play its third rubber game of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m. with sophomore right-hander Ethan Marmie (4-2, 4.50 ERA) on the mound for the Mustangs. Cal Poly fell to Oregon State and beat Hawai'i in its previous two rubber games of a three-game series.
