No. 6 Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Splits at Day Two of Big West Challenge

FOLSOM, Calif. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball split its two matches Saturday at day two of the Big West Challenge, falling to No. 3 Hawai'i 4-1 and beating CSU Bakersfield 5-0. Their record now goes to 18-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

In the matchup against the defending Big West champs in the No. 3 Rainbow Wahine (21-3), The No. 6 Mustangs took every match to three sets, with three of them decided by two points.

The No. 5 pairing of senior Hannah Hubbard and sophomore Heather Pembroke picked up the one win for Cal Poly. They won their match 21-17, 16-21, 15-13.

Competing against the No. 1 duo for Hawai'i, the Mustangs' Torrey Van Winden and Tiadora Miric fell in three very close sets (20-22, 21-13, 15-13).

Cal Poly's No. 2 undefeated pair in sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley dropped their first match of the season after they lost in three sets (21-13, 13-21, 15-13). The other undefeated Mustang duo of senior Taylor Nelson and junior Adlee Van Winden also lost their first match of the season in three sets (15-21, 21-13, 15-9).

After taking the first set, Cal Poly's No. 4 pairing of senior Raeann Greisen and freshman Macy Gordon lost the next two for Hawai'i to take the 4-1 victory and snap the Mustangs' 14-match win streak.

In the second match of the day against the Roadrunners (3-10), the Mustangs bounced back in a big way. Cal Poly won all five matches in straight sets and held CSU Bakersfield to single digits in four of the 10 sets.

Miric and Torrey Van Winden won at the No. 1 position 21-14, 21-16. Their record is now 13-5 for the season.

Sonny and Manley dominated their match at the No. 2 spot, winning 21-8, 21-10. They are now 20-1 this season. Their 19-match win streak was the longest in program history.

Nelson and Adlee Van Winden got the win at the No. 3 slot, getting the victory 21-9, 21-12. Their record now goes to 14-1 this year. Gordon and Greisen took a 21-9, 21-15 win at the No. 4 spot to improve their pairs record to 4-1.

Hubbard and Pembroke completed the sweep over CSU Bakersfield by winning their match at the No. 5 spot 21-12, 21-9 to move their record to 5-0.

The No. 6 Mustangs return for the final day of Big West Challenge play Sunday at 9 a.m. when they take on No. 5 Long Beach State.
