No. 5 Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Splits Two Matches in Malibu Saturday

MALIBU, Calif. — Taking on two teams ranked in the top 15 Saturday, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team split its two matches, beating No. 12 Arizona 4-1 and fell to No. 2 Pepperdine 5-0 in Malibu on Pepperdine's campus.

The No. 5 Mustangs (23-5) began the day against the No. 12 Wildcats (16-10) by only dropping one match (the No. 5 spot).

Cal Poly's No. 4 duo of senior Raeann Greisen and freshman Macy Gordon started the day off by winning in straight sets 21-13, 21-16. The No. 3 pairing of senior Taylor Nelson and junior Adlee Van Winden followed suit by also winning in straight sets 21-13, 21-17. Sophomore Torrey Van Winden and freshman Tiadora Miric clinched the win for the Mustangs, winning their match at the No. 1 spot 21-13, 21-17. The No. 2 duo of sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley picked up the fourth point for the Mustangs after they won their match 21-11, 21-15.

This is the second time this season Cal Poly beat Arizona. The first came on March 17 when the Mustangs beat them in Pismo Beach, Calif. 4-1.

In the second match of the day against the No. 2 Waves (21-3), a team Cal Poly beat earlier this season, the Mustangs No. 1 duo of Miric and Torrey Van Winden pushed Pepperdine's No. 1 pair to three sets, but lost a close third (21-17, 13-21, 15-12).

While Cal Poly's other pairs lost in straight sets, most of them were close. Sonny and Manley lost 22-20, 21-16 at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 4 spot, Greisen and Gordon fell 21-17, 24-22 and at the No. 5 spot, sophomore Heather Pembroke and senior Hannah Hubbard lost 21-19, 21-15.

The loss is the first true road loss of the season for the Mustangs. They are now 6-1 on the road.

Cal Poly now has one more weekend of regular season play. They return home to host Feather River College, Vanguard and San Jose State Friday, April 20 in Pismo Beach starting at 8 a.m. and the last match set for 4 p.m.
