Mustangs Split Final Day of Team Portion of Big West Tournament

HONOLULU — The Cal Poly beach volleyball program split a pair of matches Saturday at the final day of the team portion of the Big West Tournament at Queen's Beach, beating CSU Bakersfield in the quarterfinals 5-0 before being falling Long Beach State in the semifinals 4-1.

The No. 4 Mustangs started the day off strong against the Roadrunners, winning all five matches in straight sets.

The No. 2 duo of sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley held their opponents to single digits in both sets, winning 21-8, 21-9.

Sophomore Torrey Van Winden and freshman Tiadora Miric followed suit shortly thereafter at the No. 1 spot, winning 21-15, 21-11. The No. 5 pairing of sophomore Heather Pembroke and senior Hannah Hubbard then won their match 21-9, 21-17 to clinch the win for the Mustangs.

Senior Raeann Greisen and freshman Macy Gordon took down their opponents at the No. 4 position 21-12, 21-16. Senior Taylor Nelson and junior Adlee Van Winden completed the sweep for Cal Poly after a 21-18, 21-15 win at the No. 3 spot to move them into the semifinals.

Cal Poly then went up against a 49er team that beat them Friday 3-2. Three of the five matches would go to three sets. Long Beach State took the first point of the match, winning at the No. 2 position 21-19, 21-13. They would then get the win at the No. 1 spot, 21-16, 21-18.

At the No. 5 position, Hubbard and Pembroke battled three close sets with the 49ers' Hannah Matt and Marisa Ramsey but fell 17-21, 21-18, 15-13 to seal the win for Long Beach State.

Cal Poly's record is now 27-7. They will find out if they make the NCAA Tournament Sunday at 4 p.m. when the selections are announced on NCAA.com.

Competition is not over for the Mustangs though. Sunday the Big West will hold the pairs tournament at Queen's Beach and will feature three Cal Poly pairs in Torrey Van Winden/Tiadora Miric, Emily Sonny/Samantha Manley and Taylor Nelson/Adlee Van Winden.
