Van Winden, Sonny Advance to Quarterfinals at FIVB Porec Open


POREC, Croatia — Cal Poly beach volleyball sophomores Torrey Van Winden and Emily Sonny posted a pair of wins Thursday and two wins Friday at the Porec Open in Croatia to advance to the quarterfinals while competing for Team USA.

The Porec Open is a tournament organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) which hosts tournaments all over the world and features teams from across the globe.

Sonny and Van Winden, who earned a spot on Team USA by placing third in the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship in mid-May, becoming the first Cal Poly beach players to compete for Team USA defeated teams from Italy and Hungary Thursday to advance to the Porec main draw rounds.

Seeded 16th in the 16-team women's qualifier at the Porec Open, Sonny and Van Winden opened play with a 2-1 (21-17, 20-22, 15-13) win over top-seeded Alice Gradini and Claudia Puccinelli of Italy. The duo then qualified for the Main Draw with a 2-0 (21-13, 21-15) victory over ninth-seeded Dominika Hafra and Dorottya Szabo of Hungary.

In the main draws Friday, Van Winden and Sonny defeated Inna and Iryna Makhno of Ukraine 2-0 (21-18, 21-13). They then followed that with a 2-0 win (22-20, 21-11) over Poland's Martyna Kloda and Agata Ceynowa to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The finals of the tournament will be held Sunday in Porsec. All the teams are vying for a share of a 10,000 EUR total prize money pot.
