No. 6 Mustangs Fall at No. 1 UCLA in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES — Starting off its season against the defending national champions and No. 1 ranked UCLA Bruins, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team was defeated by the Bruins 5-0 Thursday.

The No. 6 Mustangs (0-1) pushed two of the five matches to three sets. Playing at the No. 2 spot, sophomore Tiadora Miric and senior graduate transfer Crissy Jones won their opening set over UCLA's Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil 21-17. The match was sent to a third and deciding set after the Bruins' pair won the second set. Miric and Jones fought hard but were just outlasted 15-13.

Cal Poly's No. 3 pairing of sophomore Macy Gordon and freshman Vanessa Roscoe also won the first set of their match 21-17 over Abby Van Winkle and Zana Muno. The Bruins won the second set to push it to a third in which they went on to win in a close contest 15-10.

UCLA won at the first, fourth and fifth positions in straight sets for the 5-0 win.

The Mustangs will have a chance to rebound quickly. They now travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for a two-day tournament hosted by Florida State that will see them play four teams ranked inside the AVCA top 20. They will take on No. 7 LSU, the No. 3 Seminoles, and No. 9 South Carolina all on Saturday as well as No. 18 Tulane, and Tampa Sunday.
