No. 6 Mustangs Top South Carolina 4-1, Earn First Win of the Season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team earned its first win of the season Saturday after taking down No. 9 South Carolina 4-1 as part of the Hilton-Tallahassee State Capitol Invitational hosted by Florida State.

The win by the No. 6 Mustangs (1-3) avenged two losses earlier in the day to No. 7 LSU 3-2 and the No. 3 Seminoles 4-1.

In the win over the Gamecocks, Cal Poly's No. 5 duo of junior Heather Pembroke and sophomore Sjea Anderson got things started with a straight sets victory 21-18, 21-18. That was followed by a win by freshman Jayelin Lombard and senior Kassandra Wright at the No. 4 spot in and epic three-set match 21-15, 16-21, 18-16 to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs' No. 2 pairing of juniors Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden then clinched the victory for Cal Poly after a straight sets win 21-18, 21-19. After South Carolina picked up a win at the No. 3 spot, the Mustangs' No. 1 duo of senior graduate transfer Crissy Jones and sophomore Tiadora Miric finished things off with a 21-12, 21-16 win to complete the 4-1 win.

In Cal Poly's 3-2 loss to the No. 7 Tigers earlier in the day, Jones and Miric picked up a win at the No. 2 spot 21-15, 23-21 and the No. 3 pairing of sophomore Macy Gordon and freshman Vanessa Roscoe also got a win, 21-18, 21-13.

In the loss to No. 3 Florida State, Sonny and Van Winden won their match at the No. 2 position 21-17, 21-19.

Cal Poly wraps up the Hilton-Tallahassee State Capitol Invitational Sunday with two matches. The first will be against No. 18 Tulane at 5:15 a.m. PT. That will be followed by a matchup with the University of Tampa at 8:45 a.m. PT.
