No. 7 Mustangs Hosting Big West Challenge at Pismo Beach This Weekend

PISMO BEACH, Calif. — Following its 4-0 weekend in Fort Worth, Texas, the Cal Poly beach volleyball program will play its final home event of the season this weekend when it hosts all six other Big West schools for the Big West Challenge at Pismo Beach.

The event will be over three days, Friday through Sunday, with 21 matches in that span. The No. 7 Mustangs (10-5) will play six matches this weekend, their first conference matches of the season.

Action gets underway at 11 a.m. Friday, with Cal Poly playing CSU Bakersfield (5-6). Matches will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Fans are encouraged to head to Wooly's in Pismo Beach (2646 Pomeroy Ave.) before the matches begin for coffee and breakfast.

During the weekend, the Mustangs will face all of the Big West programs, including the two other teams ranked inside the AVCA top 10. Cal Poly will play No. 6 Hawai'i (13-6) in its final match of the weekend on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine won the conference last season for the third year in a row, making it to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships. They will also face No. 9 Long Beach State (10-4) on Saturday at noon. The 49ers defeated Cal Poly in the semifinals of last year's Big West Tournament. Cal Poly finished third in last season's Big West Tournament.

Also playing this weekend will be CSUN (6-7), Sacramento State (1-6), and UC Davis (2-3) who is in its first year as a program. A full schedule of the weekend is posted at the bottom of the page.

The No. 7 Mustangs are currently riding a seven-match winning streak after going 4-0 last weekend at the Fight in the Fort Invite. That span includes wins over No. 13 LMU and No. 20 TCU. They are 4-5 this season against nationally-ranked teams.

Cal Poly has been led by two pairs who are both 9-3 and have won seven straight matches in the No. 1 pairing of senior Crissy Jones and sophomore Tiadora Miric as well as the pairing of freshman Jayelin Lombard and senior Kat Wright, who have primarily played from the No. 4 position.
