Seven Cal Poly Football Players Land on 2017 Big Sky All-Academic Team

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Seven Cal Poly football players, including a quartet of business administration majors, have landed on the 2017 Big Sky Conference All-Academic Team.

Seniors Colin Goebel, Jared Mohamed and Sam Ogee along with sophomore quarterback Jake Jeffrey are the business administration majors honored this week. Goebel and Ogee are offensive linemen while Mohamed rushed for 1,172 yards and four touchdowns and caught seven passes en route to a spot on the All-Big Sky First Team.

Jeffrey started the final four games following an injury to Khaleel Jenkins and completed 53 of 108 passes for 727 yards and a pair of scores.

Also honored by the Big Sky were industrial engineering major David Chellsen, industrial technology major Jake Smeltzer and journalism major Casey Sublette, all juniors in the classroom.

Ogee has one year of eligibility remaining while Sublette has one year plus a redshirt year left. Chellsen, Smeltzer and Jeffrey have two years of eligibility remaining.

Chellsen is another offensive lineman who also played on special teams. Smeltzer caught six passes for 77 yards, one for a touchdown, while Sublette averaged 40.3 yards per punt, 59.2 yards per kickoff and made seven of nine field goals and all 26 PAT tries.

The Big Sky had a total of 590 student-athletes from football, women's volleyball, women's soccer and men's and women's cross country recognized for the fall season, the most in league history. It was the fifth straight year with 500 or more honorees and second consecutive with over 580. There were 476 student-athletes that registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, while 46 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA.

"I'd like to congratulate each of our student-athletes for their dedication to academic success," said Commissioner Andrea Williams. "To see our student-athletes demonstrate their hard work and commitment, while performing at a high level academically and athletically is a great achievement."

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) Participated in at least half of the team's competitions; 2) Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at the conclusion of the most recently completed term; 3) Completed at least one academic term at his/her current Big Sky institution.

Cal Poly only plays football in the Big Sky, with most remaining sports as a member of the Big West Conference.
