Cal Poly Adds Pair of Community College Transfers to NLIs
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly has added a pair of community college transfers to its group of National Letter of Intent signees for football.

Offensive lineman Garrett Weichman of Orange Coast College and free safety Caden McCloughan of Foothill College both have two years of eligibility and a redshirt year remaining.

Weichman has played center and guard at Orange Coast College, earning all-conference honors as a sophomore. The 6-4, 320-pounder also was named the Pirates' Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2018.

Weichman compiled a 3.84 grade-point average at Orange Coast and is a two-year member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Weichman is a 2017 graduate of Edison High School in Huntington Beach, and was a guard on the varsity team's offensive line for three years. Edison claimed the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship during Weichman's senior season (2016), posting a 13-2 record.

Edison won back-to-back Sunset League titles in 2015 and 2016. Weichman earned all-league honors as a senior, was named to the All-Orange County second team by the Daily Pilot and was selected to play in the 2017 Orange County North-South All-Star Game.

Weichman (pictured at left) also wrestled at Edison. He was a league finalist at heavyweight in 2017 and earned a spot in the 2017 Orange County All-Star Classic.

Weichman, who plans to major in business administration at Cal Poly, was an academic scholar at Edison in 2015 and 2016 and also earned honors in Spanish in 2016.

He chose to continue his academic and athletic careers at Cal Poly because "it has an amazing academic reputation and I believe that will help me greatly in my future career. I am very excited to be a part of their great football team and to continue playing the sport I love."

Weichman also made official visits to Gannon (Penn.), Texas-Permian Basin, Morehead State (Kentucky), Azusa Pacific and the University of San Diego.

McCloughan (6-1, 185) was a defensive back at Foothill College for two seasons, notching 44 tackles (25 solo) as a sophomore in 2018 and 23 tackles (17 solo) as a freshman the year before.

During his sophomore campaign, McCloughan (pictured at right) also earned one sack, returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown against Hartnell and intercepted six passes and broke up four others.

Two of his thefts were returned for touchdowns — 55 yards against Redwoods and one yard versus Merced.

McCloughan also recovered a fumble, intercepted one pass and broke up five other passes during his freshman season.

McCloughan is a 2017 graduate of Los Gatos High School, helping the Wildcats to an 8-4 mark in 2016, including a 6-0 record for the De Anza League title and a berth in the semifinals of the CIF-Central Coast Section Division 2 playoffs.

A wide receiver and defensive back in high school, McCloughan made six catches for 169 yards and three touchdowns and recorded 62 total tackles (14 solo). Also on defense, he intercepted four passes, and hurried the quarterback three times. He also averaged 17.8 yards per kickoff return.

McCloughan made 28 tackles, recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass as a junior in 2015.

He twice earned first-team All-De Anza League honors in high school and American Division Pacific 7 Conference accolades while at Foothill College. As a sophomore at Foothill, he also was named to the Region II All-California First Team.

McCloughan, who played in the 2017 Silicon Valley Youth Classic, plans to major in communication studies at Cal Poly.
