Steve Kracher, equipment manager for Cal Poly Athletics from 2007-16, begins his first year as a defensive analyst on the football coaching staff.
Kracher has coached football for 39 years, including 36 years in the high school ranks and two seasons as an assistant at Cal Poly in 1985 and 1986. He has coached in California 21 years, Montana 12, Wyoming two and Hawai'i one.
Kracher was an assistant coach at San Luis Obispo High School for nine years (1987-92, 1998-2000, 2006), Mission Prep for seven seasons (2009-15), Atascadero for three (2001-04) and one year each at Nipomo (2008) and St. Bonaventure (2018). During his season at St. Bony, Kracher coached in his 400th game.
A 1977 graduate of Montana State, Kracher earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and history and his master’s degree two years later in physical education and school administration.
As a player at Montana State, Kracher was an All-Big Sky Conference selection as a running back in 1974 and 1975 and was a Kodak and United Press International All-American in 1975. He surpassed the 100-yard mark in rushing 13 times in his Bobcat career, including a career-high 222 yards against Northern Arizona and 218 more against Boise State, both in 1975.
Kracher was the career rushing leader for 27 years (1975-2002) and his 2,979 career yards is still No. 3 at Montana State while his single-season mark of 1,387 yards in 1975 also is No. 3 on the list. His 20 career rushing touchdowns is No. 7 and Kracher still holds the school record for his 6.1 career yards-per-carry average from 1972-75.
Born and raised in Montana, Kracher was inducted into the Montana State Hall of Fame in 1996. He is a Columbia Falls High School graduate.
Kracher, 65, was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 11th round in 1976. He was a high school teacher for 22 years.
Kracher, a certified athletic equipment manager and former member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association, coached at Cal Poly from 1985-86 as a running backs and linebackers assistant.
