Jones was defensive line coach at San Jose State from 2013-15 and was special teams coordinator at Northern Colorado for the 2011-12 season. At San Jose State, he coached Travis Raciti (Eagles, Vikings, Broncos) and Isaha Irving (Bears).

Besides coaching defensive linemen, he was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Prairie View A&M in Texas.
Jones volunteered his time as a coach for the second annual Middle School Bowl Game Series in July 2019 at Frisco, Texas. The event united top athletes who participated in U.S. National Team Regionals earlier in the spring, selected by Regionals' coaching staffs. Games were played at the Ford Center at The Star, the official practice facility of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jones received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Texas Southern in 1998 and completed a master’s degree in education at Wagner in 2002. He has completed National Football League coaching internships with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005 and the Seattle Seahawks in 2010.
Jones and his wife, Shondrela, have two sons, James IV (who plays football at Air Force) and Weslyn, and a daughter, Jzunie.
“It’s great to be able to have a defensive coordinator from the Big Sky take our position as defensive line coach,” said Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh. “His experience will be extremely valuable both to our position players as well as support for Coach Josh Brown on the defensive side of the ball.
“His recruiting experiences at San Jose State make him a valuable California recruiter as well,” Walsh added. “Lastly, his time at Dartmouth allows him to understand the academic piece both as a recruiter and a mentor to our current players. We’re excited to have him on our team."
