Former Mustang Nwaba Joins NBA D-League Los Angeles D-Fenders

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's basketball team's leading scorer from last season and a 2016 All-Big West Conference honoree, former Mustang guard David Nwaba will begin his first professional season as a member of the NBA Development League's Los Angeles D-Fenders.

Previously a member of the Reno Bighorns, Nwaba was traded to Los Angeles following the D-League's Oct. 30 draft. Last year's NBA D-League runners-up, the D-Fenders are the minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Lakers.

One of Cal Poly's top two scorers during each of his three years, Nwaba (2013-16) led the Mustangs last season in points (12.5), rebounds (6.3), assists (3.5) and steals (1.3) per game. Nwaba finished his career ranked 15th in program history with 465 rebounds and as one of only 23 players to score 1,000-plus career points.

Nwaba is the third member of Cal Poly's 2016 four-player graduating class to play professionally following forwards Joel Awich (Basket Club Montbrison, France) and Brian Bennett (Nürnberg Falcons BC, Germany).

As a team, Cal Poly opens the 2016-17 regular season with a 7 p.m. matchup at Pepperdine on Friday, Nov. 11.
