DAVIS – Junior guard Donovan Fields (above) finished with a team leading 13 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program trailed UC Davis for the final 38 minutes Saturday evening and dropped an 80-56 decision to the Aggies inside The Pavilion.
Senior forward Luke Meikle added 10 points for Cal Poly (6-15, 1-6), which shot 47.6 (10-for-21) percent from three-point range, but conceded a 53.6 (30-for-56) percent overall field goal mark to the Aggies (14-7, 5-2) and were outrebounded by UC Davis, 38-21.
Cal Poly returns home to Mott Athletics Center to host UC Riverside (Wednesday, Jan. 31) and Hawai'i (Saturday, Feb. 3). Tip time both evenings is 7 p.m.
During Saturday's game, UC Davis utilized a 10-0 run midway through the opening half to stretch its early lead to 19-7 with 10 minutes remaining before the break.
The Aggies, who notched 20 of their opening 29 points in the paint, stretched their lead to 29-10 before the Mustangs trimmed the deficit through successive three-pointers from junior guard Trevor John and Meikle. However, UC Davis – which shot 62.1 (18-for-29) percent from the floor during the first half – took a 46-22 lead into intermission.
UC Davis returned in the second half to record 12 of the opening 14 points and run the advantage to 56-24 with 16 minutes to play. Cal Poly shot 52.4 (11-for-21) percent from the floor during the second half, but failed to draw closer than within 24 points of the UC Davis lead the remainder of the night.
