SAN LUIS OBISPO – A redshirt with the Cal Poly men's basketball program during his first year on campus last season, guard Jared Rice was awarded a scholarship by 10th-year head coach Joe Callero on Friday morning.
"Jared has displayed tremendous work ethic, toughness and coachability," Callero said. "It's always exciting to reward a redshirt student-athlete with a scholarship. He will push (guards) Donovan Fields and Job Alexander next season as a point guard. We look forward to watching his development for four more years."
Rice, who will be a redshirt freshman next season, arrived at Cal Poly in 2017. A three-time All-Valley Oak League selection at Central Catholic HS (Modesto, Calif.), Rice averaged 15.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game during his senior season. He also captained Central Catholic HS to consecutive CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV titles.
Rice will join five other Mustangs set to make their Cal Poly debuts during the 2018-19 season. Added to Cal Poly's roster during the offseason are 6-10 freshman forward Tuukka Jaakkola (Helsinki, Finland/Helsinki Basketball Academy), 6-7 freshman forward Daxton Carr (Pocatello, Idaho/Highland HS), 6-4 junior guard Job Alexander (Trinidad State/Brown Deer, Wisc.), 6-3 freshman guard Junior Ballard (Stockton, Calif./Modesto Christian School) and 6-6 freshman forward Kyle Colvin (San Luis Obispo, CA/Mission Prep HS).
