SAN LUIS OBISPO – Tenth-year head coach Joe Callero finalized the Cal Poly men's basketball roster for the 2018-19 season on Thursday morning with the announcement that 6-0 point guard Keith Smith has transferred into the program from VMI.
Smith will redshirt the upcoming season and have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2019-20 season.
"Keith has the quickness, experience and intelligence to be a top-tier Big West Conference point guard," Callero said. "He's an excellent defender and leader and he's a natural point guard who loves to set up his teammates for easy baskets. I look forward to working with him to develop the mindset that gets the Mustangs back to the postseason."
As a sophomore last season, Smith started 29 of VMI's 30 games while averaging 7.0 points and 3.1 assists per night. He also finished eighth among Southern Conference players with 1.4 steals per game.
Smith was the only freshman to start a matchup for VMI during the 2016-17 season and averaged 4.8 points per game.
A three-year letterwinner at and 2016 graduate of San Ramon Valley HS (Danville, Calif.), Smith averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 assists per game as a senior to help the program to the California Interscholastic Federation Division I state championship title. En route, he was named to the CIF all-state third team, all-state Division I first team and the to All-East Bay Athletic League first team.
The seventh addition to Cal Poly's incoming 2018-19 class, Smith joins 6-7 forward Nolan Taylor (Keller, Texas/Pepperdine), 6-4 junior guard Job Alexander (Brown Deer, Wisc./Trinidad State), 6-10 freshman forward Tuukka Jaakkola (Helsinki, Finland/Helsinki Basketball Academy), 6-7 freshman forward Daxton Carr (Pocatello, Idaho/Highland HS), 6-3 freshman guard Junior Ballard (Stockton, Calif./Modesto Christian School) and 6-6 freshman forward Kyle Colvin (San Luis Obispo, CA/Mission Prep HS).
