PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior guard Donovan Fields scored a team high 21 points and junior forward Hank Hollingsworth (above) chalked up career highs with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double as the Cal Poly men's basketball program overturned a seven-point halftime deficit and a seven-point overtime disadvantage to edge USC Upstate in the finale of the Portland Classic on Saturday, 75-74.
Senior guard Marcellus Garrick added 15 points and sophomore wing Mark Crowe finished with 11 for Cal Poly (2-4), which trailed USC Upstate (1-5) at halftime inside Portland's Chiles Center, 38-31. The Spartans still led, 48-40, with 12-and-a-half minutes to play before the Mustangs compiled a 22-7 run to grab a 62-55 lead with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Maintaining a 67-64 lead with 56 seconds to play after Hollingsworth sank two free throw attempts, Cal Poly saw USC Upstate force overtime after guard Jure Span hit a three-pointer with 47 seconds left.
In the first all-time matchup between the two programs, USC Upstate scored the first seven points of overtime before the Mustangs held the Spartans scoreless for the final three minutes of action.
Facing the seven-point deficit, Cal Poly received a Fields layup, two Garrick free throws and another Fields jumper – his game high ninth field goal of the afternoon – to trim the gap to 74-73 with 32 seconds to play.
With Cal Poly forced to foul and place USC Upstate on the free throw line, Spartans forward Malik Moore missed the front end of a one-and-one attempt. Crowe grabbed the rebound and, with four seconds remaining, Hollingsworth's jumper inside the key was whistled for a USC Upstate goaltending violation. Cal Poly's 75-74 advantage held as Moore missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Saturday's victory marked Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero's 122nd win with the program and helped move him into sole possession of third place on the Mustang coaching career wins list.
For Hollingsworth, Saturday's effort marked his third career double-double.
Crowe added a career high nine rebounds for Cal Poly while Fields chipped in a team high seven assists.
