Cal Poly Falls to UC Davis 63-53; Long Beach State Visits Saturday
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — UC Davis went on a 10-2 run late in the second half and made all four of its free throws in the final 38 seconds to hold off Cal Poly 63-53 in a Big West Conference men's basketball game Thursday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
Junior guard Joe Mooney scored 17 points and senior guard TJ Shorts came off the bench to add 18 points for UC Davis (7-14, 3-4 Big West), who shot 52 percent from the floor and held Cal Poly (5-16, 1-7 Big West) to just 40 percent.
Senior guard Donovan Fields tallied 17 points, his 15th double-digit scoring game of the season, and three assists for Cal Poly. With three steals, Fields also became just the eighth player in program history to surpass 100 steals in his career. He now has 101.
No other Mustang scored in double figures.
The lead changed hands four times and the score was tied once in the first half. UC Davis scored the final nine points of the opening half for a 34-25 advantage at the break, hitting 56 percent of its field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes of play.
Cal Poly also led by nine points at UC Davis on Jan. 19 before falling 75-63.
The defending Big West Conference champion Aggies led throughout the second half, though Cal Poly twice pulled to within one point.
The Mustangs scored the first eight points after the break and trailed 34-33 with 15:13 to play, Karlis Garoza capping the run with a layup. UC Davis countered with an 8-0 run of its own for a 42-33 advantage.
Cal Poly again bounced back, trailing 44-43 with 8:54 to go on a layup by Fields, before the Aggies established control, outscoring the Mustangs 19-10 the rest of the way.
Mustang redshirt freshman guard Jared Rice (pictured above) made his first career start and responded with nine points, all but one of the points in the first 12 minutes of the game. Junior forward Hank Hollingsworth and senior forward Kuba Niziol each added eight points for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs outrebounded UC Davis 31-27, led by sophomore wing Mark Crowe with six. Center Matt Neufeld grabbed six boards for the Aggies.
Turnovers were even at 15 apiece.
Cal Poly concludes a two-game home stand Saturday night, hosting Long Beach State at 7 o'clock.
