SAN LUIS OBISPO – First-year Cal Poly men's basketball head coach John Smith announced the first signing of his tenure on Friday with 6-5 shooting guard Colby Rogers (Covington, Ga. / Roselle Catholic HS) having signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Mustang program for the 2019-20 season.
"We're very excited to add Colby to the Mustang family," Smith said. "He's someone who is driven and competitive on and off the floor, which fits perfectly with the culture that we have at Cal Poly. Colby will add depth at the wing position with his length and shooting ability.
"(Colby) coming from a nationally ranked and winning culture at Roselle Catholic bodes very well for the future of our program," Smith added.
As a senior at Roselle Catholic (Roselle, N.J.) – which finished No. 17 in the final USA Today Super 25 national poll and as the second highest ranked program in New Jersey – Rogers averaged 12.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 63.8 percent from the floor. With Rogers in the lineup, Roselle Catholic finished 28-4 last season.
A three-year letterwinner at Newton HS (Covington, Ga.), Rogers helped that program to a combined 82-11 record.
Rogers intends to major in kinesiology.
