Cal Poly Defeats Fresno State 4-1 in Opening Round of USF Match Play

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Jimmy Castles, Mitch Martin, Tanner Podres and Thomas Lehman all won their matches as Cal Poly defeated Fresno State 4-1 in the first round of competition in the MacKenzie Match Play on Monday at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.

Playing on the 6,500-yard par-70 course, Castles (pictured at right) won his match against Alex Lee on the 19th hole while Martin defeated Michael Cliff three-up. Podres was one up on Kevin Huff and Lehman bested Cody Riecks four-up.

Lane Pulliam edged Cal Poly's Nick Engelhardt two-up for Fresno State's lone point.

Cal Poly will face Marquette — a 4-1 winner over Menlo — in the semifinals Tuesday. The finals will be played later Tuesday.

Wyoming blanked Sacramento State 5-0 while San Francisco was a 4-1 winner over Cal State Monterey. Wyoming takes on USF in the other semifinal.
