Cal Poly 11th After 36 Holes of Play in Nick Watney Invitational


MADERA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly men's golf team carded a four-person 294 for eighth place in the first round but slipped to 11th with a 301 in the afternoon at the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State on Monday at the Dragonfly Golf Club.

Thomas Lehman and Tanner Podres (pictured above) both posted even-par 144 totals and are tied for 18th place entering Tuesday's final round. Lehman posted a 70 and 74 while Podres recorded a pair of 72s.

The rest of the Mustangs didn't fare as well.

Dominick Hoover carded a 75 and 78 for a 153 total and 59th place while Adil Bir Singh is in 60th place following a pair of 77s. Will Draper posted a 79 in the opening round but was disqualified in the second round.

Individual leader with 18 holes to play is Joey Vrzich of Nevada with back-to-back 66s for a 12-under-par 132 and a four-shot lead over Rhett Rasmussen of BYU (70-66--136). Four golfers share third place at 139.

Nevada leads the 12-school tournament with a 24-under-par 552 total thanks to a pair of 12-under-par 276 aggregate. Seven of the 10 rounds posted by Wolf Pack golfers were par or better, including four rounds in the 60s.

BYU is second, 11 shots behind Nevada, and UC Santa Barbara is another eight strokes back in third place.
