Mustangs Held Scoreless by No. 7 California in Exhibition

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – California forwards John Fitzpatrick and Alec Sundly both scored either side of halftime and forward Michael Shaddock added a goal in the second half as the seventh-ranked Golden Bears downed the Cal Poly men's soccer program in a Saturday evening exhibition at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, 5-0.

Cal Poly completes its preparations for the 2011 campaign with a 5 p.m. exhibition tuneup against UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Aug. 21.

Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for California during the 22nd minute, drawing out Mustang senior goalkeeper Patrick McLain before chipping in his first goal from 20 yards.

Sundly doubled California's advantage 88 seconds later, tapping in from five yards after midfielder Kyle Marsh saved a broken sequence by heading a ball off the Mustang end line.

The Mustangs were held without a shot on goal until junior forward Chris Gaschen (above), Cal Poly's leading returning scorer with three goals during the 2010 season, had his first attempt of the night turned away by California goalkeeper Kevin Peach during the 19th minute.

Cal Poly also had another scoring opportunity halted during the 32nd, as senior center back Patrick Sigler saw his header saved by Peach.

Sundly added his second goal just three minutes into the second half before Fitzpatrick completed his double in the 53rd with a shot from the periphery of the penalty area.

Shaddock finalized the scoring in the 76th, running onto a ball laid off from forward Michael Munoz.

Senior midfielder Kyle Montgomery, returning to the program after a two-year hiatus, and Gaschen each paced Cal Poly with two shot attempts. Sophomore forward Ian Clark produced Cal Poly's other shot on target.

The Mustangs forced six corner kick opportunities while holding California to just one.
