SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Chris Gaschen, junior George Malki and freshman Matt LaGrassa all found the back of the Santa Clara net for the Cal Poly men's soccer program on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium as the Mustangs finished their two-match exhibition stretch with a 3-1 victory against the Broncos.
Gaschen, who notched the equalizer during Cal Poly's 1-1 home exhibition draw against San Francisco on Aug. 11, bested his defender off the dribble during the sixth minute before slotting an attempt past Santa Clara senior goalkeeper Larry Jackson.
Cal Poly, which opens regular season action at Seattle on Friday, Aug. 24, doubled its lead during the 33rd minute with Malki latching on to a corner kick from Mustang sophomore midfielder Steve Palacios and converting a strike past Jackson.
Three minutes after the restart, the freshman LaGrassa – who redshirted his first season on campus last fall – kept the Mustangs in the ascendancy by accepting a feed from Malki and pounding a shot from 18 yards past Santa Clara reserve goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh.
Freshman goalkeeper Wade Hamilton, who also started Cal Poly's exhibition draw versus San Francisco, registered three saves during 61 minutes of action. His only blemish occurred during the 55th minute as Broncos junior defender Mark Daus converted a corner kick from senior defender Wes Culver.
However, sophomore goalkeeper Chase Hauser added three saves during the final half hour to keep the Mustangs in control of the result.
Junior forward Mackenzie Pridham and freshman midfielder Chase Minter both totaled a team-leading three shot attempts for the Mustangs, who finish their season-opening road trip at Washington (Aug. 26) and San Jose State (Sept. 2)
Twenty-one Mustangs saw action during Saturday's exhibition.
