Sampson to Provide Spanish-Language Commentary at FIFA World Cup

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Starting with Thursday's opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, fourth-year Cal Poly men's soccer head coach Steve Sampson will provide Spanish-language color commentary of select games for Fútbol de Primera radio from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Sampson will be working alongside the famed Andres Cantor and other commentators, including Sammy Sadovnik, former Columbia Men's National Team star midfielder Carlos Valderama, Mexican goalscorer Carlos Hermosillo, El Salvador Men's National Team manager Carlos de los Cobos and former Mexico Men's National Team standout Manuel Sol, among others.

Aside from his radio duties, Sampson will also make guest television appearances as an analyst on Telemundo, Univision, ESPN, Televisa, TV Azteca and Fox.

Fluent in Spanish, Sampson has previously served as an analyst for Time Warner Cable Deportes in Southern California covering MLS and for Televisa Deportes Network in Mexico covering 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches between the United States and Mexico and the 2012 UEFA European Championship. Sampson has also worked for Futbol de Primera during the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the 2016 Copa América Centenario, the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Sampson remains the only American-born individual to have served as a soccer analyst on Mexican television.
